Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
CITES Tagging Requirements
Due to coronavirus restrictions on personnel and volunteers, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries' staff will not attend the Virginia Trappers Association (VTA) fur sales in Wytheville (March 21) or Rockville (March 28) to affix CITES tags to bobcat or otter pelts.
Trappers who normally wait until the fur sale to get their CITES tags will need to contact a regional office by phone to arrange for a Department employee to tag their furs prior to the sale.
CITES tags for bobcats can also be ordered from DGIF Customer Service by calling (804) 367-1000 during normal business hours, if there is sufficient time to receive them in the mail prior to sale. You must have a valid harvest confirmation number for each bobcat you wish to tag. Otter tags cannot be mailed and can only by affixed by Department employees or authorized agents.
Please remember that you cannot sell or consign your bobcat or otter pelts without a CITES tags affixed to the pelt. No CITES tag is needed if you are not selling the fur or not transporting the fur out of Virginia. All pelts requiring a CITES tag must have the tag affixed by April 1 of the season of harvest.
